General Information

The Centre for Spinal Injuries and Spinal Trauma was established in December 1997 within the newly opened Trauma Centre of the Martin - Luther - University by its director, Dr. med. K. Röhl.
The Centre has 60 beds and forms part of a hospital with a total of 400 beds. It follows the guidelines of Sir Ludwig Guttmann to treat all spinal injuries in a highly specialised and centralised spinal unit. The Centre is able to treat all spinal trauma patients as well as providing postoperative rehabilitation until social reintegration is possible. A comprehensive team of specialists is on call day and night to meet all needs. Furthermore the hospital’s integrated General Trauma, Plastic and Hand Surgery, General Surgery and Medical Units allow rapid and multidisciplinary treatment for all kind of emergencies.
Operative treatment performed in the Spinal Centre ranges from acute spinal trauma to polytraumatised patients with neurological deficits, plastic treatment of pressure sores, surgery of periarticular ossification, functional reconstructive surgery, arthroscopic and discoscopic surgery and Surgery of arthrogenic or fasciogenic contracture due to spasticity. The operations are performed in 8 highly equipped theatres.

Organisation

The Spinal Centre is divided in 3 wards with 20 beds, each containing 1, 2 or 3 bed rooms utilising the latest in architectural and functional design. Each bed is equipped with individual TV, telephone and communication devices thus affording a high degree of patient comfort. A large bathroom and individual washbasins ensure privacy. Each ward is connected via large corridors to an open terrace which is a pleasant rendezvous during fine weather. Modern sightseeing lifts descend to the clinic’s central atrium where the cafeteria, shopping facilities, barber and bank counter are located. The whole hospital is equipped with automatic doors. The rehabilitation facilities are conveniently located on one floor including a gymnasium, swimming pools, hot tub, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, physical medicine and chirotherapy.

Patient Care

A qualified team of nurses look after each patient using modern nursing and monitoring facilities. Specialised care is possible for long - term ventilated patients allowing a rapid discharge from the Intensive Care Unit to the wards. Several special beds are fully equipped with automatic ventilation for those patients.

Physiotherapy, Sports Therapy

The rehabilitation department is equipped with the latest rehabilitation aids including Cybex machines and treadmill. PNF, chirotherapy and Vojta techniques are used. Adjacent to the physiotherapy department is our swimming pool area comprising a 10 x 5 m pool with integrated lifting system and hydraulic adjustable pool floor, a 16 x 10 m pool and a hot tub for paediatric treatment. The gymnasium next door offers a wide variety of sports therapies including wheel chair basketball, table tennis, badminton and archery. Scuba diving and bowling are also possible. An outdoors facility with simulated slopes, steps and surface conditions completes the rehabilitation program.

Occupational Therapy

A patient orientated individual training and reintegration is provided by the Occupational Department. Especially adapted aids such as table spoons, writing and reading equipment, functional gloves and custom made wheelchairs ensure a high functional standard. An orthopaedic technical unit within the hospital produces all necessary orthoses, tools and aids needed for individually adjusted treatment. Patient reintegration includes driving instruction in a special car for disabled persons. A driving licence may be obtained in co-operation with a local driving school. An inpatient hospital school ensures uninterrupted teaching for school children.
A special reintegration committee includes specialist doctors, physiotherapists, social workers, occupational therapists and nurses who co-ordinate and organise social and professional reintegration.

Urology

Urologic complications after spinal injuries are major problems in those patients. Special neuro - urologic diagnostic and treatment facilities are provided to ensure the proper management of in - and outpatients.

Reintegration Concepts

Early reintegration is important to promote personal freedom, motivation and self - esteem. Therefore regular downtown visits with shopping, theatre and restaurants are provided. In the clinic a regular cultural program including theatre, concerts and musical teaching with professional teachers completes the training program.
